Vietnamese Porch Dinner!

Okay, I'm back to reality after a fun-filled weekend with my family in Austin, TX.  I lived there for three years in the late 90s, and it's gotten a lot more hip since I left (I'm hoping there is no relationship between my leaving and the increased cool factor...).  So while I did not quite fit in to the young hipster vibe all around, I did enjoy all the research I did for upcoming dinner menus!

This week's dinner menu was actually inspired by trendy Bahn Mi food carts that popped up all over the place a few years ago.  I feel that we here in Winston-Salem should at least try to keep up with these national trends, so we created our own version, and it's been a hit ever since!

Thursday, September 27th:  Vietnamese Porch Dinner

Edamame Hummus with Rice Crackers
Asian Ginger Sesame Udon Noodle Salad
Bahn Mi Sandwiches - pork, chicken or marinated tofu
GF Optional - Asian Ginger Sesame Rice Noodle Salad and Bahn Mi Lettuce Wraps
Kids Meal:  Plain Pork or Chicken Sandwiches with Raw Veggies & Dip ($6)
Dessert:  Camino Bakery Ginger Molassas Cookies ($6)

Get You Through the Week Meals:
#1  Our famous Tamale Pie with beef or TVP (Reg $25, L $30)
#2  Mediterranean Shrimp or Eggplant Wheatberry Bake (Reg $25, L $30)

We love any kind of hummus, and this Edamame version is the bomb.  The fact that it's super-healthy is a bonus, but the flavor is awesome and it's a great way to get your meal started off right.  A note of warning, however:  you may want to keep it all for yourself - I always end up with the last scoop after my kids get into the hummus!

Our Udon Noodle Salad combines some of my favorite textures & flavors - soft, fat noodles, crunchy veggies, savory ginger sesame dressing!  It's great hot or cold, and kids love it, which makes me love it even more.

The Bahn Mi sandwich will be a family favorite, as it is for many of our DOTP customers.  We start by pickling our own veggies.  Then we spread lovely French bread with homemade cilantro mayo, and pile it high with shredded pork, chicken, or marinated tofu, and then top it off with pickled veggies.  The flavors all combine and make for bite after bite of yummy delight!

And clearly, you don't want to enjoy this delicious meal and then find yourself hungry all weekend!  Plan ahead for company or just hungry kids and stock up on one or both of our fabulous GYTTW meals!

The Tamale Pie is a comfort food classic:  layers of cornbread, cheese, beef, black beans & mild, delicious seasonings make this the perfect meal for an easy family meal, or, dressed up with a salad and some guacamole, great for company.

We're excited to introduce a very healthy, tasty dish that we created recently:  The Mediterranean Shrimp Wheatberry Bake.  I seriously love wheat berries - the whole grain that wheat products are made with - because it is filling, flavorful and has a wonderful, chewy texture that beats rice hands-down.  Paired with kalamata olives, feta cheese, peppers & shrimp or eggplant, it's a fancy dish that will elevate your family dinner to new levels!

Of course, we also have lots of little extras to help keep your life on an even keel (I know I would veer terribly off course without my queso fix!).  Any of these items are great to keep on hand or even give as gifts!

Optional Extras:
Mimi's Chile con Queso ($6)
Spicy Pork Porch Pockets ($10)
Fresh Veggie Bag ($6)
Jalapeno Ranch Dressing ($4)
Roasted Red Pepper Dressing ($4)
Salad Pack:  Organic Romaine, Veggies, Jalapeno Ranch & Croutons ($10)
Vantastic Pimento Cheese :  regular or Spicy!! ($5)

Camino Bakery Goodies:
Granola ($4)
Pumpkin Bread ($5)
Cinnamon Raisin Bread ($6)

That's all we've got this week!  Remember that delivery is Thursday, we'll have dinner items available for pick-up on Tuesday, and we're always happy to answer questions, give advice, talk about our kids, go get manicures, you know, all that stuff that you're looking for in a dinner delivery service!

See you on the porch!
